IUMS Offers Condolences on the Passing of Union Member Professor
Dr. Abdullah Gamal Al-Din
﴿يَا
أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً،
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي، وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي﴾ [الفجر: 27–30].
With
deep sorrow and grief, and with hearts content with Allah’s decree, the
International Union of Muslim Scholars extends its condolences to the family of
the late Professor Dr. Abdullah Gamal Al-Din, and to the entire Muslim Ummah,
on the passing of one of the prominent figures of Islamic history and
civilization, who devoted his life to the service of knowledge and the
dissemination of learning, and whose academic and research efforts enriched the
Islamic library.
The late
scholar was a model of refined manners and high moral character, known for his
forgiveness and forbearance. Throughout his distinguished academic career, he
made significant contributions to the enrichment of Islamic and historical
thought through notable scholarly and humanitarian achievements.
Academic Qualifications:
The late
Professor – may Allah have mercy on him – obtained a Bachelor’s degree in
Arabic Language and Islamic Sciences from the Faculty of Dar Al-Uloom, Cairo
University, in 1963; a Master’s degree in Islamic Sciences (Islamic History and
Civilization) in 1965; and another Master’s degree in Islamic History from the
Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, University of Granada, Spain, in 1964. He also
earned his PhD in Islamic Studies (Islamic History and Civilization) from the
Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, Central University of Madrid – Spain, in 1978.
Career Progression:
He began
his academic career as a researcher at the American University in Cairo in
1963, then served as a teaching assistant in the Department of Islamic History
and Civilization, Faculty of Dar Al-Uloom, in 1964; an assistant lecturer in
1972; a lecturer in 1978; an associate professor in 1984; then a full professor
and Head of the Department of Islamic History and Civilization at the Faculty
of Dar Al-Uloom, Cairo University, from 1994 to 2002. He later served as an
emeritus professor from 2007 onwards, continuing to contribute to research,
authorship, and participation in conferences.
Courses Taught:
Throughout
his academic career, the late professor – may Allah have mercy on him – taught
numerous specialized courses in Islamic history and civilization, including:
the Prophetic biography (Seerah), the History of the Rightly Guided Caliphs,
the History and Civilization of Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent, the History
and Civilization of Al-Andalus, Islamic political, economic, and social
systems, the Islamic Renaissance movement, contemporary Islamic movements,
texts from religious heritage, Umayyad history, Islamic Egypt, the Eastern
Islamic world in the modern era, the development of historical writing, and the
scientific methodology for editing heritage texts. He also taught personal
status law at the Faculty of Sharia, International Islamic University,
Islamabad – Pakistan.
Scholarly and Administrative Activities:
He
participated in numerous scientific conferences and seminars both within and
beyond the Muslim world, contributed to specialized academic committees,
supervised and examined many graduate theses, and authored notable books and
research in his field.
The late
scholar – may Allah have mercy on him – was a model of the reformist scholar
and wise preacher, combining knowledge with action, dedicating his life to
serving his religion and his Ummah.
The
International Union of Muslim Scholars proudly remembers his scholarly and
da‘wah legacy, asking Allah Almighty to envelop him in His vast mercy, grant
him the highest ranks in Paradise, reward him abundantly, place his works in
the scale of his good deeds, and grant patience and solace to his family,
students, and all who loved him.
Indeed,
to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.
