Discrimination Crimes in Canada
Ottawa –
Canada
The
Canadian capital, Ottawa, witnessed a horrifying racist assault targeting a
hijab-wearing Muslim woman on a bus in the Kanata area, west of the city,
sparking widespread condemnation from officials and community organizations.
According
to Ottawa Police in cooperation with the public transit company, the incident
occurred on Monday when a white man in his twenties or thirties boarded the bus
and directed Islamophobic insults at the woman before slapping her forcefully
in front of passengers, threatening to smash her face against the window and
kill her, and then left at Banfield Street.
The
Kanata Islamic Association revealed that the suspect had previously targeted
hijab-wearing women in earlier incidents and urged hijab-wearing women and
visible minorities to exercise caution when using public transportation,
especially in the Kanata area.
Islamophobia Unacceptable
Canadian
Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an
“unprovoked assault,” affirming that hatred and violence have no place in
Canadian society and that the perpetrator must be held accountable.
He
added, “No one should feel unsafe on their way to work or school,” expressing
solidarity with the victim.
Broad Community Support
Ottawa
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, who spoke with the victim’s family and Muslim community
leaders, emphasized the importance of standing united against Islamophobia and
ensuring a safe environment for everyone.
Ottawa
Police clarified that the “Hate and Bias Crimes” unit is investigating the
incident in coordination with the victim and Muslim community leaders,
stressing that such incidents have a profound impact on diverse communities and
that they will not tolerate any hate or discrimination crimes.
