UK Supreme Court
Lifts Ban on “Palestine Action,” Upholds Freedom of Expression and Assembly
The UK Supreme Court in London
has ruled that the British government’s decision to ban the pro-Palestinian
organization “Palestine Action” and designate it as a terrorist group was
unlawful. The decision follows a legal challenge filed by one of the movement’s
founders.
Interior Secretary Suella
Braverman said she intends to appeal the ruling at the Court of Appeal.
The UK government had banned
“Palestine Action” last July after the group intensified its targeting of
British defense companies linked to Israel, using direct actions that often
involved blocking entrances and spraying red paint.
The Supreme Court upheld two
grounds of the legal challenge, noting that the ban “constituted a serious
violation of the right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly,”
according to Justice Victoria Sharp. She added that the ban would remain in effect
to allow the lawyers on both sides to address the next steps.
In response to the ruling, the
Metropolitan Police announced that it would focus on gathering evidence related
to allegations involving “Palestine Action,” rather than making immediate
arrests.
The police confirmed that they
will continue monitoring instances of support for the movement while
prioritizing the identification of those involved and taking appropriate legal
action at a later stage.
