Tens of Thousands Cross Sydney Harbour Bridge in Mass Protest
Against Siege and Genocide in Gaza
Tens of
thousands of protesters defied heavy rain and strong winds on Sunday, August 3,
and marched across the iconic Harbour Bridge in Sydney, Australia, in a massive
demonstration demanding an end to the war and aggression on Gaza, the lifting
of the siege, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The
protest, held under the banner "Walk for Humanity," reflected the
growing public rejection of the aggression on Gaza and the policies of
starvation and genocide.
Participants
held up cooking pots to symbolize the hunger faced by residents of the besieged
Gaza Strip, waved Palestinian flags, and chanted slogans such as "We are
all Palestinians," "Freedom for Palestine," and "Ceasefire
now."
The
march saw the participation of prominent figures, including WikiLeaks founder
Julian Assange and former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr.
Senator
Mehreen Faruqi delivered a speech in which she described the march as
“historic,” calling for the imposition of the strongest sanctions on the
Zionist occupation, and accusing its forces of committing massacres against
civilians in Gaza.
Before
the march, the New South Wales Police and local government attempted to block
the protest from crossing the bridge, citing security concerns. However, the
Supreme Court ruled in favor of allowing the demonstration. Heavy security
forces were deployed in both Sydney and Melbourne, which also witnessed a
similar protest.
For his
part, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the Zionist
occupation’s refusal to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and its killing of
civilians is "indefensible." He reiterated his support for a
two-state solution, although he has not formally recognized the State of
Palestine.
Protesters
carried banners bearing the names of thousands of Palestinian children martyred
in Gaza since the outbreak of the war in October 2023. Meanwhile, Labor MP Ed
Husic called on his government to recognize the State of Palestine.
