Malaysia’s Youngest Mufti: Fawwaz Fadhil… Eid Memories and the
Responsibility of Da’wah
Kuala
Lumpur:
As Eid
al-Fitr approaches, the Federal Territories Mufti of Malaysia and member of the
International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Fawwaz Fadhil, recalls special
memories linked to his late father, former president of the Malaysian Islamic
Party (PAS), Sheikh Fadhil Noor—a scene that reflects the intertwining of
family life with public and religious service.
In press
statements, Fawwaz Fadhil, 45, recognized as the youngest mufti in Malaysia’s
history, noted that the family home in Alor Setar was always bustling during
holiday seasons, with well-wishers and supporters visiting. This was during a
period when his father was deeply involved in political work and Islamic
da’wah, serving as a member of parliament for the Baling constituency and
leading the opposition.
He
explained that these experiences had a profound impact on his personal
development, saying: “During Eid, many people would come to the house. My
father was a politician, and most of my memories of him are seeing him
extremely busy,” adding that his image of his father is closely tied to the
weight of responsibilities he carried.
He
further highlighted that growing up in an environment blending public service
and community work shaped his early awareness of responsibility and instilled
in him the importance of combining Islamic scholarship with engagement in the
nation’s affairs.
Dr.
Fawwaz Fadhil represents a new generation of scholars who combine traditional
religious knowledge with openness to societal issues, following a family legacy
that emphasizes the continued scholarly and da’wah role in serving Muslim
communities.
