Launch of the “Fiqh of Balance” Conference in Istanbul: A Scholarly Vision for the Nation’s Equilibrium and Renaissance

The scientific conference titled “Fiqh of Balance” kicked off in Istanbul, Turkey, under the slogan: “Towards a More Balanced and Prosperous Ummah.” The event is jointly organized by the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Sultan Muhammad Al-Fatih Waqf University, and the Waqf of Islamic Scholars, with the participation of a distinguished group of scholars, researchers, and academics from various Arab and Islamic countries.

The two-day conference (June 21–22) aims to reinforce the concept of balance in Islamic thought and practice, transforming the Fiqh of Balance from a theoretical framework into a practical methodology that addresses contemporary challenges and the crises facing the Ummah.

Fiqh of Balance: A Religious and Civilizational Necessity

In his opening address, Sheikh Professor Dr. Ali Mohieddin Al-Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, affirmed that this conference crowns extensive scholarly and foundational efforts aimed at establishing the Fiqh of Balance as a comprehensive way of life that links theory with application across various fields.

He stressed that the disruption of proper balances—whether in understanding Islamic law or in practical reality—has led to division and civilizational decline. He warned against reducing religion to mere ritualistic practices, disconnected from constructive work, development, and righteous action.

He emphasized that unity, progress, and revival can only be achieved by returning to the true essence of Islam and by applying sound religious principles in thought and behavior.

Fiqh of Balance: A Response to Contemporary Transformations

In a recorded speech, Sheikh Mohamed Al-Hassan Ould Al-Deddo Al-Shanqeeti, Vice President of the Union, underscored the importance of practically applying the theory of balance in a way that aligns with the rapid developments of the modern world. He viewed this branch of jurisprudence as an effective tool for reorganizing thought and life on balanced and legitimate foundations.

Understanding the Texts Requires Methodological Balance

Professor Dr. Essam Al-Bashir, Vice President of the Union and Deputy Head of the Trustees of Al-Aqsa Foundation, affirmed that the Fiqh of Balance is one of the most critical methodological tools for understanding partial texts within a comprehensive and integrated vision. It protects scholars from intellectual and methodological deviation and calls for adopting new approaches to address the Ummah’s issues, with the Fiqh of Balance at the forefront.

The Absence of Balance: A Cause of Civilizational Decline

Mr. Abdulwahhab Ekinci, Assistant Secretary-General of the Union, stated that the Islamic reality suffers from a lack of balance in both thought and action. He stressed that this imbalance has been one of the key reasons for civilizational deterioration and noted that the conference seeks to fill a significant jurisprudential gap in this vital field.

The Ummah’s Crisis is a Crisis of Methodology

Dr. Abdulmajid Akrout, Head of the Conference’s Preparatory Committee, emphasized in his speech that the conference is a serious academic effort to revive the Fiqh of Balance. He considered balance to be the path to sound understanding and societal renaissance, which can only be achieved through solid knowledge and comprehensive insight.

Towards a Contemporary Theory for Dealing with Legal Rulings

Professor Dr. Mohamed Al-Jamal, Head of the Conference’s Scientific Committee, pointed out that the event presents a renewed jurisprudential vision for dealing with Islamic legal rulings. It does so through an integrated approach that combines deep foundational work with responsiveness to a changing reality, asserting that the conference represents a qualitative leap in contemporary ijtihad (independent reasoning).

Conference Themes: Balance in Thought and Practice

The conference addresses five main themes in its scientific sessions, including:

*The Fiqh of Balance in Islamic heritage and its theoretical foundations,

*Causes of imbalance in the modern era,

*The impact of balance on religious and intellectual discourse,

*Applications of the Fiqh of Balance in political and social jurisprudence,

*Contemporary models for reviving this Fiqh to address modern challenges.

The organizers hope the conference will contribute to rebuilding religious awareness on the foundations of balance and moderation and provide practical answers to contemporary challenges, inspired by the spirit of Islam and its higher objectives.
