The International
Union of Muslim Scholars Condemns Persecution of Muslims in India, Seizure of
Their Endowments, and Warns of the Danger of Discriminatory Laws on the
Country’s Stability (Statement)
The International Union of
Muslim Scholars stands in solidarity with the rights of Muslims in India and
condemns any infringement upon these rights through unjust laws and measures.
The Union advises the Indian government to retract these laws, as they ignite
discord and harm India’s interests and its relations with the Islamic world.
The Union follows with deep
concern and sorrow the developments in India—a nation that was once a sanctuary
of security, equality, and freedom after its independence, in which Muslims
played a significant role. However, since the rise of the right-wing extremist
party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014 under Modi’s leadership, systematic
policies of killing, displacement, intimidation, and destruction of mosques and
Muslim schools have emerged under the pretext of lacking prior legal approval.
In 2019, the Citizenship
Amendment Act was enacted with the intent to displace millions of Muslims and
expel them from India, partially implemented in the state of Assam.
Moreover, additional laws,
administrative regulations, clear policies, and revealing statements have been
issued, showing that the current government seeks to transform India from a
secular pluralistic state into a Hindu state—similar to the Zionist project in
Palestine.
These fears have been echoed by
the United Nations and human rights organizations.
Most recently, the Indian
Parliament approved a bill proposed by the ruling right-wing party aiming to
expand central government control over Muslim endowments. The National Congress
party opposed this bill, deeming it unconstitutional and discriminatory against
Muslims.
In light of this painful and
alarming situation, the Union affirms the following:
First: It vehemently condemns
any law, action, or project based on racial discrimination, foremost among them
this unjust law that grants the government control, management, and
confiscation of Muslim endowments, which are a trust inherited from ancestors
for future generations.
Second: The Union calls on the
Indian government to repeal these unjust laws rooted in oppression and
discrimination against Muslims, emphasizing that such laws are invalid, harmful
to the nation and its people, incite hatred, and fuel animosity.
Third: The Union urges the great
and wise Indian people, known for their honor and dignity, to prevent the
current government from manipulating the nation’s constitution and stirring
hatred and enmity for partisan gains over the public interest of India.
It is well known the
longstanding friendship between India and the Arab and Gulf worlds. Muslims in
India are original inhabitants whose rights must be preserved.
Wisdom demands preventing
anything that divides the nation and banning any actions that could lead to
internal strife and civil wars.
Finally, we at the International
Union of Muslim Scholars care deeply about India and hope it remains a symbol
of human rights, dignity, and genuine equality. Progress comes with justice,
honor, and the contentment of peoples—oppression is darkness and a herald of
civilization’s decline.
