Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars: Defending the Palestinian People Is a Legal, Moral, and Religious Duty

Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars: Defending the Palestinian People Is a Legal, Moral, and Religious Duty

Dr. Ali Muhammad al-Sallabi, Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, emphasized that scholars and Islamic institutions are more than ever called upon to actively support the Palestinian people and halt the brutal crimes committed by the Zionist occupation.

He stated in a press statement to "Arabi21" that struggling to protect lives and respond to injustice is among the greatest goals of Islamic law. Silence or negligence in the face of these crimes is a form of complicity. He called on the free people of the world to urgently act to stop these violations that breach all humanitarian and international laws.

Al-Sallabi added, “Human solidarity and mutual support are religious duties that compel us to unite to save the Palestinian people from the genocide being carried out by the Zionist occupation,” stressing that this struggle is a fundamental religious obligation dictated by Sharia, which calls for supporting the oppressed and repelling aggression.

Regarding the occupation’s actions, he explained that over the past twenty months, the Zionist occupation has used heavy weapons against civilians, destroyed livelihoods, and forced reliance on humanitarian aid, disregarding all ethical and legal standards. He criticized the internal investigations by the occupation as mere cover-ups.

He insisted that the accountability of occupation soldiers and leaders is required at all times and places, not only before the International Criminal Court. He described the Zionist regime as one founded on genocidal ideology that ignores the shock it has caused humanity’s conscience.

Al-Sallabi affirmed that isolating this regime is a legal and moral duty for all countries, pointing out that the advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice demands an immediate and unconditional end to the occupation.

He condemned the shooting of Palestinians waiting for aid as not only shocking but a humiliating and brutal crime, holding the United States directly responsible alongside the occupation for these ongoing crimes.

In conclusion, he called on the scholars and religious institutions of the Ummah to support the legitimate struggle, awaken consciences, and stand with the Palestinian people against this genocide, affirming that standing for truth and justice is the true path to peace and dignity in the region.

Since October 7, 2023, the Zionist occupation has waged a genocidal war on Gaza, involving killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls including orders by the International Court of Justice to halt the aggression.

The aggression, backed by the United States, has resulted in over 191,000 Palestinian casualties, mostly women and children, over 11,000 missing persons, hundreds of thousands displaced, and widespread famine that has claimed many lives, including dozens of children.

The occupation continues to control Palestine and lands in Syria and Lebanon for decades, rejecting withdrawal and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders.
