IUMS: Egypt and Al-Azhar Face a Historic Moment to Lead an
Islamic Coalition to Break Gaza Siege and End the Aggression
The
International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) affirmed that Egypt holds a
pivotal role in the efforts to break the siege on the Gaza Strip, emphasizing
that Cairo possesses the keys to initiating an end to the ongoing war—if the
Egyptian people, Al-Azhar, and the country's political leadership lead a
regional coalition in cooperation with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
A Pressing Islamic Coalition
In an
official statement, IUMS Secretary-General Dr. Ali Muhammad Al-Sallabi stressed
that a genuine alliance among Arab and Muslim nations—from Indonesia, Malaysia,
and Turkey to the Gulf and Maghreb states—has the capacity to generate real
political and humanitarian pressure on the international community. Such
unified pressure could force a ceasefire, ensure the flow of humanitarian aid,
and bring an end to the suffering of millions of Palestinian civilians.
Al-Sallabi
noted that Egypt is not merely a geographical gateway but a political and
spiritual pillar of the Islamic world. He called on the Egyptian people to rise
with their historical weight in support of the Palestinian cause, asserting
that the current moment presents Egypt and Al-Azhar with a historic opportunity
to take the lead in ending the aggression and lifting the siege.
Support from the Gulf and Turkey
Al-Sallabi
highlighted the urgent need for a unified stance from the Gulf countries,
Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, urging them to join a clear
coalition that backs Egypt’s efforts to halt the aggression on Gaza. He stated,
“If the Islamic world speaks with one voice, no power will be able to continue
the war or maintain the siege on the children and women of Gaza.”
The IUMS
Secretary-General emphasized that the current phase demands a real
coalition—not merely symbolic statements. He insisted that any Islamic
initiative must originate from Al-Azhar and the Egyptian people, with clear
backing from the major powers in the Islamic world.
A Call to Al-Azhar and the Conscience of the Ummah
Al-Sallabi
renewed his call to Al-Azhar—describing it as “the beacon of moderation and the
spiritual leadership of the Islamic world”—to take the initiative in mobilizing
the global conscience and working alongside the scholars of the Ummah to launch
broad alliances rooted in religious and moral legitimacy.
He
concluded his statement by saying: “If the voice of Al-Azhar and the conscience
of the Ummah align with popular will and political decision-making, no power
will be able to stand in the way of ending the war and saving the people of
Gaza.”
Gaza Between Famine and War
On the
ground, aid trucks have started moving from Egypt toward Gaza amidst the
ongoing Israeli aggression and the absence of a ceasefire agreement following
the failure of the Doha negotiations.
At the
same time, the occupying forces announced “temporary truces” and limited “safe
corridors,” even as the massacres of civilians continue.
Gaza is
enduring the worst humanitarian catastrophe in its history, as famine overlaps
with a campaign of genocide carried out by the Israeli occupation, with
American support and global silence in the face of international appeals and
orders from the International Court of Justice.
Since
March 2, the occupation has completely closed the crossings into Gaza to
humanitarian and medical aid, in an escalated starvation campaign, while UN
agencies warn of an imminent risk of mass death.
According
to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the number of famine- and malnutrition-related
deaths has risen to 133, including 87 children. The total number of martyrs and
wounded has surpassed 204,000—most of them women and children—with over 9,000
missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
