Kurdistan Branch of the Union Holds Its First Forum in
Sulaymaniyah to Strengthen Scholars’ Unity and Serve the Ummah
On
Monday, August 11, 2025, the Kurdistan branch of the International Union of
Muslim Scholars convened the first regular forum for the Sulaymaniyah district
in northeastern Iraq under the theme: “International Union of Muslim Scholars –
Goals and Duties,” with the participation of union members from the province.
The
forum opened with a beautiful recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a
welcoming speech delivered by Dr. Muhammad Nasrallah Habib, union member and
head of the Sulaymaniyah district, who warmly greeted attendees and emphasized
the significance of the meeting in enhancing the role of scholars in serving
the Muslim Ummah.
The Devout Scholar and Guardians of the Creed
Dr.
Ahmed Wahab Majid Al-Binjawini, head of the Kurdistan branch, delivered a
valuable lecture titled “The Devout Scholar,” in which he highlighted the
esteemed status of devout scholars as guardians of the creed and heirs of the
prophets. He stressed their role in clarifying the truth, refuting doubts, and
protecting the Ummah from deviation.
He also
warned against the danger posed by scholars allied with authorities who
politicize religious knowledge to serve rulers and justify injustice. He
cautioned against distorting texts to serve the whims of rulers and cited
Quranic examples of scholars who betrayed trust and succumbed to worldly gains,
such as Balaam ibn Baawrah, the Jewish rabbis, and Qarun.
The Union and Its National and Humanitarian Objectives
Dr. Omar
Abdul Aziz, founding member of the branch, delivered a lecture titled
“International Union of Muslim Scholars – Goals and Duties,” explaining that
the Union is an independent scholarly body comprising scholars and thinkers
from across the Muslim world. It aims to unify scholars’ efforts to serve the
Ummah’s causes based on a balanced and inclusive methodology.
He noted
that the Union was established to unify scholars’ ranks, spread moderate
understanding, support the Ummah’s causes, and back Muslim peoples in their
just struggles such as Palestine and Al-Aqsa Mosque, while promoting religious
and civilizational awareness through education and media.
Dr. Omar
also addressed the circumstances surrounding the Union’s formation in exile,
highlighting the translation of the Union’s charter into multiple languages,
including Kurdish. He emphasized strategic goals including uniting scholars’
energies, bridging intellectual differences, rejecting disputes, confronting
hostile schemes, and holding rulers accountable.
He
reviewed the essential duties of scholars, stressing the importance of
self-education, adhering to the Union’s characteristics of moderation and
balance, deep jurisprudential understanding, mobilizing scholars to disseminate
the Union’s message, while maintaining a balance between openness and
commitment and fostering a sense of personal responsibility.
