UK: Islamic Organizations Describe Running Over of Hijab-Wearing
Woman in London as Deliberate Islamophobic Attack
British
Islamic civil society organizations have announced that the incident in which a
hijab-wearing woman was run over in east London constitutes a deliberate
Islamophobic attack.
The
incident occurred on March 8 on Harrow Manorway, when a car struck the woman
just after she had exited her vehicle, which she had parked on the side of the
road, according to British media reports.
British
Islamic organizations stated that the woman may have been targeted because she
was wearing a hijab, considering the incident as an indicator of the rising
hate crimes against Muslims in the UK.
The
Muslim Social Justice Initiative said in a statement:
"The
Muslim woman has now become a visible target for attempted murder, and mosques
and Muslims in the UK are being targeted during Ramadan."
The Tell
MAMA observatory for anti-Muslim hate crimes also described the incident in a
post on X as a deliberate attack on a Muslim woman.
Surveillance
footage showed the driver intentionally moving toward the woman before fleeing
the scene at speed. Bystanders quickly came to her aid, and teams from London
Ambulance Services provided first aid before transferring her to the hospital.
Media reports confirmed that she is not in life-threatening condition.
In a
statement, London Metropolitan Police said they are aware that the incident has
caused concern among local residents and confirmed that investigators are
working to identify the suspect and determine the motive behind the attack.
